Winter Survival Tips for Pets

Winter Survival Tips for Pets

If you are like me, you actively dread wintertime! But just like death and taxes, there’s no getting around it. My dog, on the other hand, can’t wait to roll around in the snow!  With a little preparation and common sense, the winter season can be enjoyable for all.

1. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DOGS OUTSIDE IN THE WINTER. I can’t believe I still must say this every year. Dogs get cold. This is not a myth. If you are cold, they are cold. Bring them inside and keep them inside.

2. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS IN CARS. Just as you should never do this in summer, do not do it in the winter. As previously mentioned, animals get cold. A car can turn into a freezer very quickly. If pets are unable to remain with you the duration of the trip, leave them at home.

3. DO NOT ALLOW DOGS TO WALK ON ICE MELT OR ROCK SALT. Both of these things can burn paw pads causing pain and infection.

4. REMOVE ICE/SNOW FROM PAWS. Paws are extremely sensitive and can become dry, cracked and/or painful. If possible, use doggie boots or paw wax for protection.

5. BANG ON CAR HOOD BEFORE STARTING. Stray animals try to keep warm by laying in warm spots like car hoods and wheel wells. Rap on the car a few times before driving off.

6. BE CAREFUL WHEN TURNING DOWN HEAT AT NIGHT. When turning down your heat in the evening, remember your pets. Hardwood floors get chilly so make sure there is a warm place for them to lay like a pet bed or pillow.

7. DON’T FORGET TO EXERCISE. It’s natural to want to hibernate during the winter, but like humans, pets can pack on a few extra pounds when not as active. Talk to your veterinarian about diet and indoor exercises to limit weight gain.
