Seasonal Allergies in Pets

It may surprise you that dogs and cats, like humans, can suffer from seasonal allergies. This happens when their immune systems become sensitive to substances present in their surroundings. Pollens from trees, grass, and weeds can be especially problematic. In the case of dogs, can develop allergies at any age, with some breeds being more prone than others. Terriers, Setters, Retrievers, and flat-faced breeds such as Pugs, Bulldogs and Boston terriers are more likely to suffer from these types allergies.

General allergy symptoms include:

  • Itchy, red, skin (allergic dermatitis)
  • Itchy, runny eyes
  • Itchy ears and ear infections
  • Sneezing
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Snoring caused by an inflamed throat
  • Paw chewing/swollen paws
  • Constant licking

If you suspect that your pet has seasonal allergies, you should schedule a trip to the Vet. Your veterinarian will be able to determine if your pet has seasonal allergies as opposed to other types of allergies such as food, fleas, or environment substances like dust or cleaning products.
If your cat is allergic to environmental pollutants, it may worsen your cat’s asthma. In this case, your vet may prescribe medications that open your cat’s airway for the short-term; long term solutions include corticosteroids. And here’s a good reminder: cigarette smoke is bad for your cat, especially if your cat has asthma.

Treatment for allergies can include allergy injections, oral antihistamines such as Loratadine (Claritin) or Benadryl, or in the case of severe reactions, a corticosteroid such as Prednisone may be prescribed.

Other things you do to help relieve symptoms include:

  • Giving frequent cool baths with specially formulate shampoo to wash away allergens from fur and skin
  • Wash paws thoroughly each time your pet comes in from outdoors
  • Clean and vacuum floors and bedding on a regular basis
