Seasonal Allergies in Pets
Just like us, our dogs and cats can suffer from seasonal allergies. When pollen from trees, grass, and weeds fills the air, it can trigger sensitive immune systems in our pets, causing serious discomfort.
While any dog can develop allergies at any age, certain breeds face a higher risk. Terriers, Setters, Retrievers, and flat-faced dogs like Pugs, Bulldogs, and Boston Terriers tend to experience these reactions more frequently.
If you suspect your pet is reacting to the changing seasons, watch for these common allergy symptoms:
- Itchy, red skin (allergic dermatitis)
- Watery, itchy eyes
- Ear itchiness and frequent ear infections
- Sneezing
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Snoring caused by an inflamed throat
- Swollen paws or constant paw chewing and licking
Notice any of these signs? It is time to schedule a visit with your vet. A professional can help you figure out if outdoor pollen is the true culprit, or if your pet is actually reacting to other allergins such as food, fleas, dust, or household cleaning products.
Seasonal allergens require special attention if you have a cat, as environmental pollutants can make feline asthma much worse. In these situations, a vet might prescribe medication to open your cat’s airways quickly, or recommend corticosteroids for long-term management. Keep in mind that cigarette smoke heavily aggravates asthma, so keep it far away from your cat.
Depending on the severity of the allergies, your vet may suggest a few different treatments. Common options include allergy injections, oral antihistamines like Claritin (loratadine) or Benadryl, and stronger corticosteroids like prednisone for severe reactions.
You can also take simple steps at home to help your pet find immediate relief:
- Give your pet frequent cool baths using a specially formulated pet shampoo to wash pollen off their fur and skin.
- Wash or wipe their paws thoroughly every time they come inside from the yard.
- Vacuum your floors and wash pet bedding regularly to keep indoor allergens to a minimum.
By paying attention to their symptoms and working closely with your vet, you can help your pets stay comfortable and happy all season long.
